RSE

From September 2020, sex and relationships education (SRE) was replaced by compulsory relationships and sex education (RSE). The following became mandatory as part of the PSHE curriculum: Relationships education in all primary schools.

At St Oswald's we use a variety of teaching resources to fufil these requirements such as:

  • Values Curriculum
  • Collective Worship
  • HeartSmart
  • Goodness and Mercy
  • The Christopher Winter Project
  • No Outsiders

Some of these materials are used as our ongoing approach and some are used during the annual health week focus in the summer term.  Although we have mixed age classes, our sex education work is taught in year goups to ensure it is always age appropriate and clearly progresses from one year to the next.

We strongly believe in the importance of providing a broad and balanced curriculum for our children so that all children can flourish educationally, but also socially and emotionally.  For this reason, we believe in the importance of teaching a comprehensive RSE (relationships and sex education) curriculum which gives our children the knowledge and skills necessary to keep themselves safe and healthy in life and in their relationships.

The Christopher Winter RSE Project

Within the resource there is an increased focus on safeguarding/keeping children safe. The resource also encourages children to develop the skills of listening, empathy, talking about feelings and relationships with families and friends. We communicate with parents before the start date to fully inform how the scheme will be delivered.  If you would like to discuss anything related to your child's RSE curriculum, please do contact us and we would happily arrange a meeting with you.

The resources in this scheme are age and developmentally appropriate.
